The goals of the Catawba Island Historical Society are Preservation, Perspective and Inspiration.
2023 was the first year the Historical Society has awarded a $1000 scholarship to help inspire future generations to maintain our mission to “Educate and inspire future generations about Catawba Island's rich history and development.” In 2024 a second $1000 scholarship was added, funded by founding Historical Society Trustee William Van Der Giessen and his wife Darleen. Interested students submit applications for both through their guidance counselors and recipients are selected by a committee of CIHS board members.

The first recipient of the Van Der Giessen scholarship, funded by founding CIHS Trustee William Van Der Giessen & wife Darleen, is Maria Maringer from Danbury High School. Maria plans to attend Notre Dame University to study Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics with a minor in Actuarial Science.
The winner of the 2024 CIHS scholarship was Seth Auger from Oak Harbor High School. He will attend the University of Toledo to pursue Adolescent and Young Adult Studies – History Education. Port Clinton high school senior, Olivia Perry, was been selected as the first recipient of a $1000 academic scholarship from the Catawba Island Historical Society (CIHS).
Funds for the initial year of the grant were left as a generous will bequest to CIHS by a long time Catawba resident, David Hufnagle.
